This week’s song is “Mary, Did You Know?” by Mary Lowry and Buddy Greene. It is another song that countless artists have performed since its debut in 1984. I chose this version by the Gaither Vocal Band as Mark Lowry himself performs it and is backed by Guy Penrod and David Phelps. Mark is an insightful, passionate, and humble singer, songwriter, minister, and comedian, an interesting vessel of God; his love of Christ is evident in all he sings, writes, and teaches. Today as we enjoy “Mary, did you know?” we marvel at how special Mary must have been in the sight of God. We are encouraged by the message of the Christmas story. We are in awe of Mary’s obedience and recognize how she must have pleased our Father to carry His Son. How Mary must have been flooded by fear, anticipation, confusion, awe, and joy as she watched God’s Son, her Son, grow up in perfect perfection before her very own eyes. Mary’s obedience demonstrates to us the obedience we must adhere to when asked of by the Holy Spirit of God. Mary’s obedience demonstrates how God can use any circumstance to further His Kingdom. How we desire to please our Father as Mary did so long ago.
