Breath of Heaven

Please add this worship song to your online church sermon, morning devotion, or evening quiet time.
Today’s song is “Breath of Heaven” performed by Amy Grant

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, and will call Him Immanuel.”
Isaiah 7:14 (NIV)

“’How will this be,’ Mary asked the angel, ‘since I am a virgin?’  The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.  So the holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.’”
Luke 1:34-35 (NIV)

Today’s song, “Breath of Heaven,” was released by Amy Grant in 1992.  The original music and lyric were by an English songwriter, Chris Eaton.  Amy Grant, pregnant at the time, asked permission to re-write the verses to tell of Christ’s birth and biblical story from a woman’s perspective (Mary’s perspective).   Mary is a young girl; most Bible scholars put her age at 13-16 when she heard from God that she would give birth to His Son, the long-awaited Saviour, Emmanuel.  It is hard to imagine the disbelief, anxiety, and fear she must have experienced as she told her news to disbelieving people.  Mary would, however, display incredible faith and obedience in accepting God’s call.  Mary would fulfill her calling by the breath of Heaven, by God’s mercy and grace guiding her through each step/stage of her journey.

Mary teaches us:
We should always be prepared to answer God’s call.  His call on our lives may not make sense to us or anyone around us, but He always has a greater plan than any of us could imagine.
We must put all our faith in God, and He will never let us down.  He will elevate us further than we can imagine.
God has always used and continues to use everyday people, male-female, rich-poor and King-slave, as His instruments to further His Kingdom.
We must live as servants of Christ so that all honour and glory will go to Him for His marvellous works.

May we hear Christ’s calling today.
May the breath of Heaven sustain always.

In Christ,
Lou-Anne

Breath of Heaven
Lyrics

I have traveled many moonless nights
Cold and weary with a babe inside
And I wonder what I’ve done
Holy father you have come
And chosen me now to carry your son

I am waiting in a silent prayer
I am frightened by the load I bear
In a world as cold as stone
Must I walk this path alone?
Be with me now
Be with me now

Breath of heaven
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Lighten my darkness
Pour over me your holiness
For you are holy
Breath of heaven

Do you wonder as you watch my face
If a wiser one should have had my place
But I offer all I am
For the mercy of your plan
Help me be strong
Help me be
Help me

May we grow together in the love of Christ to reflect upon the mercies and blessings upon our lives, to feel the presence of God’s living Holy Spirit through worship to sing, pray, laugh, dance, cry, but mostly to praise our Lord and Father as we were indeed created2praise.
