Today’s song is “Build My Life” Pat Barrett, feat. Chris Tomlin
“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Matthew 7:24-27
Today’s song, “Build My Life,” by Pat Barrett, feat. Chris Tomlin, challenges us to make a personal declaration of trust in God’s unchanging love and righteous character. He is an unwavering cornerstone, unshaken by life’s circumstances or uncertainties.
“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.” Isaiah 28:16 (NIV)
Let’s face it, life can be difficult. We do not need to look far to see ourselves and the ones we love facing financial, emotional, physical, spiritual, relational, occupational, and intellectual challenges. These challenges can sometimes be more than we can bear on our own.
“Build My Life” beautifully points us to the Parable of the Wise and the Foolish Builders in Matthew 7:24-27, where Christ taught about two foundations:
The Foolish Builder chooses the “sands” of convenience, worldly trends, personal feelings, or human intelligence. It’s easy to build here, but the foundation can never bear the weight of problems or crises.
The wise builder digs deep and anchors their life in the bedrock of Christ’s teachings. This takes time, effort, and sacrifice, but it ensures that when the “storms” of life hit (as they inevitably do), you will not collapse.
Building on the Rock, Christ Jesus, doesn’t guarantee an “easy” life. However, it does ensure that, through Him, trials can be transformed from random suffering into a process of refinement and growth. Christ is a sure anchor and foundation, empowering us to navigate and overcome any difficulty set before us.
Just as the chorus “I will build my life upon the rock” builds and repeats with intensity, I am reminded that our faith in Christ can do the same; from a small thought of Christ, we can grow and mature to who we were always intended to be. Our God is neither pushy nor impatient; He is good, patient, and kind. He doesn’t expect perfection and accepts us exactly as we are, whether broken, battered, bruised, sinful, or guilty.
Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, He guides, teaches, and empowers us, building our lives layer by layer toward sanctification. God masterfully uses every struggle to mature us.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
Romans 8:28
Choosing Christ is a personal, daily decision. If the idea of acknowledging Him as your Lord and Saviour is new to you, why not talk to Him? Be honest. Tell Him about your pain, frustrations, or doubts. He is a big God; He can handle your questions. He welcomes any conversation and will meet you in your doubts, proving His faithfulness.
“For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 3:11
Questions to think about:
If everything were taken from you today, including your career, health, finances, and family, who or what would remain as your source of security?
How might God be using your current difficulties, not just to test you, but to build a specific area of your character and strengthen you?
Have you ever had dreams of a purpose you could fulfill to better the lives of your family, friends, or community? Why not, on a secure foundation with Christ at your lead, take a leap of faith and act on your dreams?
Why not take your pains, frustrations, or doubts cast by the evil one and give them to Christ? Is it not worth a shot to give God a try?
In Christ,
Lou-Anne

“I will build my life upon Your Love
It’s a sure foundation
I will put my trust in you alone
I will not be shaken”
May we grow together in the love of Christ to reflect upon the mercies and blessings upon our lives, to feel the presence of God’s living Holy Spirit through worship to sing, pray, laugh, dance, cry, but mostly to praise our Lord and Father as we were indeed created2praise.
